Warning Lights Explained

There are two Categories of warning lights that may light up or flash on your dashboard.

YELLOW OR AMBER; IS A WARNING
RED MEANS; STOP THE CAR

The following lights are for guidance only.

OIL WARNING LIGHT

THE OIL WARNING LIGHT- This indicates that the oil level is low and needs immediate attention to top up the oil
SHOULD THIS LIGHT TURN RED DO NOT DRIVE PLEASE CALL YOUR ROADSIDE RECOVERY AND ARRANGE RECOVERY TO OURSELVES.


TYRE PRESSURE MONITERING SYSTEM

This indicates the tyre pressure is low (call for advice or check your vehicle manual for recommended tyre pressures) Your tyre pressures will need to be corrected as soon as possible.


TRACTION CONTROL

This indicates that there is a fault with the traction control which is built into the ABS, this keeps the vehicle straight, preventing skidding, diagnostic machine is required. This would also fail an MOT


ENGINE MANAGEMENT LIGHT (EPC)

This light indicates a possible fault with the emissions or running of the vehicle. Diagnostic machine will be required. A flashing light indicates it could be a major fault and immediate action required. This would also fail an MOT

DIESEL PARTICULATE FILTER (DPF)

Do not ignore this light, call us for advice. Refer also to your manual to establish how to regenerate. This filter could block and lead to costly repairs.

ELECTRONIC STABILITY PROGRAM (ESP)

This light prevents, detects and recovers the vehicle from skids. It indicates there is a fault and diagnosis will be required. This light being present at MOT would also result in a failure.

BRAKE WARNING LIGHT

This light indicates a possible low brake fluid. If the light turns red it may mean that the handbrake is still engaged so check this and if it is not it indicates a potential fault with the braking system and diagnosis will be required.

ANTI LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (ABS)

This is a safety system that’s stops the wheels from locking up and prevents the vehicle from skidding, this light indicates a fault, the ABS system will not function and it would fail an MOT.

ELECTRIC POWER STEERING WARNING LIGHT

This indicates a fault with the steering system, your power assisted steering could fail, your vehicle needs immediate attention. If the light turns red please do not drive.

BATTERY WARNING LIGHT

This indicates that there is a fault with the charging system, this needs immediate attention as the car will lose power very quickly and the steering will become very heavy.

COOLING WARNING LIGHT

This light indicates either the coolant level is low or that there is a fault in the cooling system. The engine could overheat. Please check the level and if this is ok please do not drive and contact us. Also check that the temperature gauge isn’t above 90 degrees.

AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT

This light indicates a fault with the supplemental Restraint system (SRS) and diagnosis will be required. This will fail an MOT.
